Call for Nominations and Applications for AAG 2020 Geomorphology Specialty Group Awards

The Geomorphology Specialty Group of the AAG invites 2020 nominations for the Melvin G. Marcus Distinguished Career Award, the Grove Karl Gilbert Award for Excellence in Geomorphological Research, the M. Gordon “Reds” Wolman Graduate Student Research Award, and the Graduate Student Paper Competition Awards.

The Melvin G. Marcus and Grove Karl Gilbert Awards require a nomination package. Please bundle all requested supporting documents into one PDF file for submission. Submissions should be e-mailed to the Awards Committee Chair, Lisa Davis, University of Alabama, lisa.davis@ua.edu.

The M. Gordon “Reds” Wolman Graduate Student Research Award and the Graduate Student Paper Awards (Master’s and Ph.D.) require an application package.  Please bundle all requested supporting documents into one PDF file for submission. Submissions should be e-mailedto the Awards Committee Chair, Lisa Davis, University of Alabama, lisa.davis@ua.edu.

All nominations and applications should be submitted by January 31st, 2020.

  • MELVIN G. MARCUS DISTINGUISHED CAREER AWARD
    The GSG Awards Committee invites nominations for the GSG’s the Melvin G. Marcus Distinguished Career Award. The award is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to geomorphology over his/her career. Nominations for the Melvin G. Marcus Distinguished Career Award remain active for five years. The award will be distributed at the AAG Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, April 6-10, 2020.

    The nomination package should include in a single PDF file with nominee’s name included in the file name (ex., “JDoe_MarcusAward”):


1. A brief description of the candidate’s contribution to geomorphology,
2. A brief biographic sketch,
3. A select bibliography, and
4. Three letters of support from colleagues.

To be considered for the 2020 award, the Awards Committee must receive the nomination package and any supporting documentation by January 31, 2020.

  • GROVE KARL GILBERT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN GEOMORPHOLOGICAL RESEARCH
    The GSG Awards Committee invites nominations for the GSG’s the Grove Karl Gilbert Award for Excellence in Geomorphological Research. The award is presented to the author(s) of a single significant contribution to the published research literature in geomorphology during the past three years. Only a book, refereed journal article, or monograph will be considered with an emphasis on refereed research articles. Nominations for the Grove Karl Gilbert Award remain active for two years. The award will be distributed at the AAG Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, April 6-10, 2020.

    The nomination package should include in a single PDF file with nominee’s name included in the file name (ex., “JDoe_GilbertAward”):

    1. A copy of the relevant publication.
    2. A statement as to why the publication deserves the award.
    3. (Optional) supporting letters from colleagues.

    To be considered for the 2020 award, the Awards Committee must receive the nomination package and any supporting documentation by January 31, 2020.

  • M. GORDON “REDS” WOLMAN GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD COMPETITION
    The GSG Awards Committee invites graduate students to participate in the GSG’s M. Gordon “Reds” Wolman Graduate Student Research Award competition. Each year, the GSG awards two graduate student research grants to help cover the costs of data acquisition, fieldwork, and laboratory analysis required to complete thesis or dissertation research. Awards are $400 for Masters students and $600 for Ph.D. students. To be eligible for the award, students must be members of the AAG and the GSG. Award winners will be announced at the AAG Annual Meeting in in Denver, CO, April 6-10, and publicized in the AAG Newsletter.

    The application package must include in a single PDF file with applicant’s name included in the file name (ex., “JDoe_WolmanPhDAward” or “JDoe_WolmanMastersAward”):

    1. A research proposal (approximately 5 pages in length)
    2. Two short letters of recommendation

    To be considered for the 2020 award, the Awards Committee must receive the application package and any supporting documentation by January 31, 2020.

  • GRADUATE STUDENT PAPER AWARD COMPETITION
    The GSG Awards Committee invites graduate students presenting in any GSG-sponsored session at the AAG Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, April 6-10, 2020, to participate in the GSG’s Student Paper Award competition. Graduate students from all branches of geomorphology are encouraged to submit an application for consideration. Separate awards of $250 can be given for Masters and Ph.D. students.

    To be eligible for the award, students must be members of the AAG and the GSG and registered to give a first-authored presentation in a GSG-sponsored session. The subject matter may deal with any aspect of geomorphology. Papers are evaluated on the research contribution to the field of geomorphology and on the effectiveness of the presentation. Award winners will be announced after the annual meeting and publicized in the AAG Newsletter.

    The application package must include in a single PDF file with applicant’s name included in the file name (ex., “JDoe_PhDPaperAward” or “JDoe_MastersPaperAward”):

  • A cover letter indicating your graduate degree status, and the date, time, session number, session chair

contact information, and location of your presentation.
2. A copy of the 250-word abstract submitted to the AAG.

To be considered for the 2020 award, the Awards Committee must receive the application package and any supporting documentation by January 31, 2020.
